The Oyo State Police Command has commenced investigation into the killing of Ibadan businessman, Chief Emmanuel Sunday Kale, popularly known as Chief SUNMEC, who was shot on Saturday, February 14, 2026, in the Jericho area of Ibadan.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity for security reasons, alerted the police and assisted security personnel in locating the scene. Kale was found critically injured and rushed to a university teaching hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Police operatives recovered identification documents bearing the victim’s photograph and personal details, which helped establish his identity.
Kale was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sunmec Clothings, a business based in Gbagi, Ibadan. He was also known for his involvement in community development and grassroots political mobilisation.
Speaking to journalists on Monday at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Haruna, said he had ordered the deployment of a special tactical team from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
He said the team had been directed to provide regular reports and timely updates on the progress of the investigation.
“I have directed a special tactical team to investigate this incident thoroughly. The team is expected to provide me with regular reports and timely updates as the investigation progresses,” Haruna was quoted as saying.
As part of the investigation, the SCID Iyaganku tactical team is expected to engage businesses, offices, hotels and other establishments around the area to obtain available CCTV footage and other security recordings.
Such footage could assist investigators in reconstructing events before, during and after the attack, tracking the movements of the suspects and identifying vehicles or other persons who may have been connected to the incident.
The tactical team is also examining eyewitness accounts, forensic evidence, the victim’s vehicle and information gathered from residents and business owners in the area.
The police also recovered some political-related materials from the victim’s vehicle. However, the nature and contents of the materials are being withheld from public disclosure at this stage, as investigators believe revealing the details could compromise investigative leads and the ongoing work of the tactical team.
Police said no definite motive had been established and that investigators had not reached any conclusion on whether the killing was politically motivated.
The command said all possible leads were being pursued and urged members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information that could interfere with the investigation.
CP Haruna appealed to anyone with useful information about Chief Kale, his business activities, his movements or those of the suspects before and after the incident to approach the police.
He assured the public that the command would pursue every credible lead with a view to identifying and arresting those responsible for the killing.
The SCID Iyaganku tactical team is expected to submit further reports as the investigation continues.
